In the age of myth, the master craftsman Daedalus built wonders for King Minos of Crete among them the deadly Labyrinth. Fearing his secrets, the king imprisoned Daedalus and his young son Icarus in a high tower. Refusing to surrender, Daedalus fashioned wings from feathers and wax so they might escape the island by air. Before they leapt into the sky, he warned his son: “Fly neither too low, lest the sea weigh you down, nor too high, lest the sun melt the wax.” Together they rose from captivity, the first mortals to taste true flight.
But freedom overwhelmed Icarus. Enchanted by the open heavens, he climbed ever higher, closer to the blazing sun. Heat softened the wax that bound his wings until the feathers scattered like snow, and Icarus plunged into the sea below. That sea would bear his name, the Icarian Sea forever a symbol of daring ambition, of the beauty and danger in reaching beyond one’s limits.
